When Facebook first started getting attention, it was filled with college kids and teenagers who wanted to stay in touch with their friends. The majority of the posts consisted of meaningless chatter that gave these teens a way to spend their free time socializing but things have really changed over the years. Today, everyone from moms and dads to big corporations use Facebook.

Most teens don’t want their parents reading what they write to their friends and more importantly, they don’t want their friends reading what their parents write. For this reason, many of them are leaving Facebook and using messenger apps like WeChat and WhatsApp but what does that mean for businesses? How will it affect your marketing strategies?

It talks about how the decline in teen users is real but that it doesn’t mean they’re not still there. Teens are just not using it in the same way or as often as they used to.

Many teenagers like their privacy, especially when it comes to parents and other family members. For this reason, they have found other ways to communicate with their friends and just use Facebook occasionally. However, since many of them are still there, the odds of them using Facebook again in the near future is very good. This means that the potential to increase your number of Facebook likes and to reach these users with your ads later so that they become your friends is also very good.

What Does It All Mean for Businesses?

While the number of teen users may have declined, the number of users in their fifties and up has increased. It’s also important to remember that even though ads are designed to entice teenagers and encourage them to use specific products it’s usually the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that actually respond to the majority of the ads. Therefore, the decline in Facebook teen users really shouldn’t affect businesses that much.

You may find that you need to tweak the ads a little here and there to target mainly adults but with the increase in users over the age of 50, you may need to do that anyway. You also have to look at the fact that even if teens don’t use the site now, it’s a good chance that they’ll begin using it more actively again when they become adults.

While only time will tell how this decline will affect business, there doesn’t appear to be any reason for companies to worry at this point.
